Arthritis Awareness

May is Arthritis Awareness Month. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 46 million American adults have been diagnosed with arthritis. It is the most common cause of disability in the United States, limiting the activities of nearly 19 million people.

The term arthritis is used to describe more than 100 rheumatic diseases and conditions that affect one or more of your joints, the tissues which surround the joint and other connective tissue. The pattern, severity and location of symptoms vary depending on the specific form of the disease. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Typically, arthritis symptoms include pain, aching, swelling, redness, and decreased range of motion in or around one or more joints. Some conditions can also involve the immune system and various internal organs of the body.

Although arthritis is more common among adults aged 65 years or older, people of all ages (including children) can be affected. Arthritis is seen more often in women than men. Some types of arthritis run in families which can make you more susceptible to factors that may trigger the disease. People who have injured a joint or who are obese have a higher risk of developing this disease.

Research has shown that 30 minutes of physical activity five days a week decreases pain, improves function and delays disability. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces the risk of developing arthritis and may decrease disease progression. Although there is no cure for most types of arthritis, early diagnosis and appropriate management can help people decrease pain, improve function and stay productive.

Depending on the type of arthritis, there are many medications, both prescription and over the counter, that can treat the symptoms of this disease. Commonly used medications include analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, biologics and corticosteroids.
